Alvaro Folgueiras grew up in Malaga, Spain, where he began his basketball career with Unicaja Baloncesto before moving to the United States to attend DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida. He committed to Robert Morris and played mostly as a reserve during his freshman season. As a sophomore in 2024-25, Folgueiras broke out in a major way, starting all 35 games and earning Horizon League Player of the Year honors after averaging 14.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He scored in double figures in 27 of his 35 appearances, including a 35-point outburst against Northern Kentucky. Folgueiras chose Iowa over Providence and Villanova in April 2025, giving Ben McCollum a skilled, physical frontcourt presence with two seasons of eligibility remaining. He also represented Spain on the U20 national team.
