Blake Fagbemi is a hometown product who took an unconventional path to Illinois. The 6-0 guard from Naperville originally committed to Division II Truman State, but when his coach there parted ways with the program, Fagbemi reopened his recruitment. Illinois assistant Zach Hamer reached out the same night, and the rest is history. As a senior at Benet Academy, Fagbemi led the Redwings to a 33-5 record and the IHSA 4A state championship, averaging 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. He was named East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year and earned 4A All-State second team honors. Head coach Brad Underwood praised Fagbemi at Big Ten Media Day, noting he has "more dunks in practice, at 5-foot-10, than anybody on our team" and called him "a pest defensively."
