Cade Phillips broke a deep family connection to Alabama when he committed to Tennessee in May 2022. The Rainbow City, Alabama native attended Jacksonville High School, where he averaged 13.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game and was named Class 4A Final Four MVP after leading the Golden Eagles to their first state championship in boys' basketball. Phillips' father, John David, played quarterback at Alabama from 1996-98, his mother Reagan played basketball at Alabama from 1996-99, and his uncle is former Crimson Tide quarterback Brodie Croyle. Despite the family legacy, the 6-9 forward chose Tennessee over Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, and Stanford. Phillips spent his senior prep season at Link Academy in Missouri before enrolling at Tennessee. As a freshman in 2024-25, he averaged 4.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 15.0 minutes per game while leading the team in field goal percentage at 63.0 percent and ranking second in blocks.
