Originally from Jackson, Michigan, Cooper went mostly unrecruited through his first three years of high school, playing at Jackson Northwestern before transferring to Ypsilanti Prep Academy as a junior. He then moved to IMG Academy in Florida, where he averaged 12.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks while helping the team to a 25-5 record. Michigan State coaches spotted him during his time with the Florida Rebels in the Nike EYBL circuit, and he committed in May 2022 as a late addition to the class. Cooper redshirted in 2022-23 and steadily developed over the next two seasons. Now in his senior year, he has started every game and is posting career bests in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, including a career-high 19-point performance against Oregon.
