C.J. Cox's recruitment to Purdue was an unlikely story that began with a chance encounter. The guard from Milton, Massachusetts, had no high-major offers heading into his senior year at school and was unranked by most recruiting services. That changed during a high-profile AAU tournament in Las Vegas, where Cox averaged 18.7 points per game for the Middlesex Magic, including 29, 27, and 26-point performances against elite competition. Purdue head coach Matt Painter happened to be watching the tournament finale while scouting a different player who eventually signed with Kentucky and was immediately drawn to Cox's shot-making ability and leadership qualities. Cox committed in early October 2023 and quickly proved Painter right, scoring 11 points including three consecutive three-pointers against then-No. 2 Alabama early in his freshman season. He earned a consistent rotation role and averaged 5.9 points and 2.8 rebounds as a freshman in 2024-25 while embracing whatever role Painter asked of him.
