A native of Olean, New York who grew up cheering for St. Bonaventure from inside the Reilly Center, DeRose attended Olean High School, where he averaged 16 points per game, earned Big 30 First Team and First Team All-League honors twice, set the school record for three-pointers in a single game, scored a career-high 41 points, and helped the team to a 2022 sectional title. Despite strong high school production, he generated no Division I offers from a small school in Section 5, Class B. DeRose had worked out with coach Mark Schmidt's son, which gave Schmidt familiarity with his game without the need for film or a formal tryout; DeRose emailed basketball operations in December of his senior year and earned a preferred walk-on spot before the 2023-24 season. He has remained on the roster for three seasons as a junior in 2025-26.
