Matt Van Komen is a senior center who has been a key part of Marshall's rotation, averaging 7.8 points in 21 games. He dominates the glass with 7.8 rebounds per game. He does his damage in the paint, not from the perimeter.
At 7 feet 4 inches, Matt Van Komen is one of the tallest players in college basketball, and his path to Marshall is among the more unconventional in the Sun Belt. A three-star recruit out of Pleasant Grove, Utah, who drew interest from Gonzaga and Baylor coming out of high school, Van Komen signed with Utah before injuries derailed his early career and sent him to Saint Mary's, then Hawaii Pacific at the Division II level. He returned to Division I at Elon, where he started all 32 games last season, averaged nearly eight rebounds and 2.3 blocks in just 23 minutes, and shot 72 percent from the field while posting a top-10 block percentage in the country. Marshall head coach Cornelius Jackson brought him in for his final year of eligibility, where he has been a commanding presence in the paint.
