The American Athletic Conference was formed in 2013 when most of the original Big East's football-playing members chose to remain as an independent entity after the basketball-focused schools broke away. The AAC brought together programs like Connecticut, Memphis, Houston, Temple, Cincinnati, and Tulane — schools with proud basketball traditions seeking a competitive home. Houston's Kelvin Sampson has rebuilt the Cougars into a perennial top-25 program and national championship contender, reestablishing the AAC as a legitimate basketball conference.
