The Mountain West Conference was established in 1999 when eight schools departed the Western Athletic Conference seeking a higher profile for both football and basketball. UNLV, with its Runnin' Rebels dynasty under Jerry Tarkanian that produced a national championship in 1990, established the conference's basketball identity. San Diego State has become the modern standard-bearer, reaching the 2023 national championship game and consistently producing defensive-minded squads that punch above their recruiting ranking.
