The Big 12 Conference was formed in 1996 through a merger of the Big Eight Conference and four members of the Southwest Conference. In basketball, no program defines the league more than Kansas, whose Jayhawks have won more NCAA Tournament games than any program in Division I history and claimed national titles in 2008 and 2022. Baylor's stunning 2021 championship and perennial contenders like Iowa State, Texas Tech, and Houston have made the Big 12 arguably the deepest basketball conference in America.
