The America East Conference, founded in 1979 as the ECAC North Atlantic Conference, serves universities primarily in the northeastern United States and Canada. Vermont, Albany, Maine, New Hampshire, Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), Binghamton, Bryant, UMass Lowell, and New Jersey Institute of Technology compete in a league that combines New England's traditional basketball culture with newer programs building their athletic identities. UMBC made history in 2018 by becoming the first 16-seed to defeat a 1-seed in NCAA Tournament history, stunning Virginia in one of the sport's most shocking upsets.
