The Big South Conference, founded in 1983, serves mid-sized universities primarily in the Carolinas and Virginia. Winthrop, Campbell, High Point, Longwood, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, and Radford compete in a conference that has produced several memorable NCAA Tournament upsets. Winthrop has been the consistent standard-bearer, earning multiple tournament bids and representing the conference well in opening-round games under Jerry Peterman and Kevin Cunnane.
