The Horizon League, founded in 1979 as the Midwestern City Conference, has built a reputation as one of the more competitive mid-major conferences in the Midwest. Butler's back-to-back national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011 — narrowly losing both times — announced the Horizon League as a legitimate basketball conference capable of producing Final Four-caliber teams. Wright State, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Milwaukee, UIC, Youngstown State, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, and Robert Morris form the current membership.
