The Southland Conference, founded in 1963, serves universities primarily in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and surrounding states. McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Houston Baptist, New Orleans, UIW, and Lamar compete in a conference with deep Gulf Coast basketball traditions. Stephen F. Austin, before its move to the WAC, built one of the more impressive mid-major programs in the conference's history, earning multiple tournament bids and providing competitive first-round opponents.
