The Southern Conference, founded in 1921, is one of the oldest athletic conferences in the United States and served as the predecessor organization from which the SEC and ACC were formed when those conferences split off in the 1930s and 50s. The SoCon now serves smaller universities across the Southeast and Appalachian region. Samford, Mercer, ETSU, Furman, VMI, Western Carolina, The Citadel, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Wofford, and Longwood compete in a conference with deep Southern basketball traditions.
