The Western Athletic Conference, founded in 1962, was once home to major programs like UNLV, Fresno State, and Nevada before those schools departed for other conferences. The current WAC serves a diverse group of smaller programs across the West, Southwest, and beyond. Utah Valley, Tarleton State, Southern Utah, Lamar, Abilene Christian, Sam Houston, New Mexico State, Seattle, and Grand Canyon compete in a conference that spans from the Pacific Northwest to Texas. New Mexico State has been the WAC's most prominent basketball program, earning multiple tournament bids and developing NBA talent over several decades.
